can't imagine their consciences. >> reporter: of course president obama has left hawaii. he is heading back to washington from his family vacation. we learned from the white house that the president had made calls to the top four congressional leaders mcconnell and boehner on the republican side, pelosi and reid on the democratic side. we'll see what the president has in mind when he touches down back in washington a little later this morning, harris. harris: mike you mentioned it. i'm mentioning it too. it is coming into the newsroom from senator mcconnell's spokesperson and just wondering what the republicans say they want. they want to review legislation and make decisions how best to proceed. they're waiting for now the white house to make the next move. >> reporter: there is definitely a game of chicken going on where the senate democrats are saying, well we need to know from mcconnell what he is willing to do. mcconnell is saying i will not rubberstamp a plan i haven't seen so you need to lay out a plan. we know from speaker boehner's spokesman he is in ohio. he will let us know

's. it's amazing what soup can do. >>> the president heading back to d.c. from hawaii to try to keep america from going over the fiscal cliff. as the house and senate reconvene tomorrow. the clock is ticking. six days until the deadline. the way things work in washington, can they actually get something done before the end of the year? brianna keilar, what is the latest on this? >> hi, there, drew. president obama will be heading home from hawaii tonight, logical time arri arriving in d.c. thursday morning when the senate will be reconvenin reconvening, and the senate, all eyes on now, that we look for the last-ditch effort to avoid the fiscal cliff. even though the president is returning on thursday, we may not see the senate roll out its bill to deal with the fiscal cliff. perhaps for a couple of days. this is entirely possible we've learned from sources as senate majority leader harry reid works to get republican support in the senate, which he will need if he's going to pass a bill. and so we're still waiting to see exactly what it will look like that the white house wants for th

is going to go into recess and go to hawaii, i think it's a bad message for the economy. we should have dealt with this months ago. the house passed. we did the responsible thing, we passed a bill in august to keep all the tax rates even. the country has to remember that the house has acted it's only the united states senate and the president that have not come together. bill: we'll see if we see you both on the 26th of december, some time that week. thank you for your time. martha: what are the consequences this lawmakers do not reach a deal in time? are we on our way as some warn to becoming greece? doug mcelway is live ph washington. there are nice things about greece that you won't mind emulating, but your budget, their economy not one of them. >> the parthanon a nice thing to see when you go to athens. when ron paul was running he got huge applause when he said a government that continues to deval its currency destroys the middle class. >> they don't have the money, they run out of borrowing power, guess what they do. they start printing money. >> reporter: the federal reserve has

that deadline, time to cut a deal is rapidly running out. ed henry with the president in honolulu, hawaii. ed, as we get this news. possibly the president leaving his vacation early? >> that's right, jamie. we are now learning from an administration official that it is likely the president will be leaving hawaii tomorrow. probably in the evening to get back to washington early thursday. possibly meet with congressional leaders. start working the phones, trying to move this forward because, frankly, when you talk to administration officials in private, they admit this is pretty tall right now because the president hasn't had a conversation with speaker boehner since last friday. now, if there is any hope in any of this, it's the fact that the president's aides say that both he and the speaker before they left washington on friday and saturday made clear that maybe christmas could provide a cooling off period that will bring them back together. take a listen. >> everybody can drink some eggnog, have some christmas cookies, sing some christmas carols. enjoy the company of loved ones. >> hope spr

, explain to all of us because it appears the lights are out in washington d.c. the president is in hawaii. everyone is home. with all the sides saying that they expect to go over the cliff, it looks pretty likely that that might just happen. >> well, i certainly think that concern is growing. that that's a real possibility at this point. at the same time, thomas, i think there's still so much pressure on all sides so get something done because as he heard joe lieberman said, the consequences would be huge. the economy could potentially slip back into recession. the white house has described this as a working vacation for president obama, but the reality is that negotiations are largely deadlocked on all sides. there have been a few talks going on at the staff level, but the real bulk of this work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington later this week after the christmas holiday and resume manageses. that's when we're going to see the focus really shift away from the house and on to the senate. of course, speaker boehner tried to get his plan b, alternative bill through t

and hawaii. officials tell cnn that the working assumption is that the north koreans got outside help from others, including iran. so today's launch is raising some huge concerns. let's go to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. i assume they are pretty surprised and alarmed by the successful launch over at the pentagon? >> look, wolf, because of everything you just mentioned, indeed, the u.s. military, the intelligence committee have been watching north korea for days now 24/7 because they did expect to launch and they announced it. but they were having technical problems so a lot thought it wouldn't happen until next week. when it happened last week, there was a surprise. the north korean anchor's excitement was clear. >> announcing the launch of a long-range rocket that put a north korean satellite to orbit around the earth. they clearly achieved one goal raising everyone's anxiety level. >> this is a step towards the ability to build a long-range missile that could strike parts of the united states. >> but i don't think this really was a great advance forward. i think in terms of

to negotiate their freedom. >>> hawaii and the rest of the nation remember a gentle giant of the u.s. senate. >> with a heavy heart, it bid aloha, aloha to my good friend, colleague and brother, daniel inou inouye. >> you will be excused if you didn't know that before his death yesterday. hawaii's daniel inouye ranked third in the line of presidential succession. he was the senate pro tem, the senior member of the senate's majority party, having served 50 years during his half century in office. inouye made many, many friends, lots happen. but made remarkably little noise. initially barred from serving in world war ii because of his japanese roots, he petitioned to get himself into the army, wound up losing an arm, fought with such distinction that he earned the medal of honor. he was first elected to congress back in 1959, the year hawaii became a state. and earned such respect he was named to committee that investigated watergate, investigated the iran/contra, also rose to the top of the powerful senate appropriations committee, which helped him steer federal dollars to his beloved hawaii.

's. there has been a loss here in the senate. the senator from the hawaii, daniel inouye at 88 years old passed away yesterday. that will likely cause interruption for a few days for memorial services next couple weeks. whether for the president and most members of congress to go to hawaii or for the late senator to lie in state at the capitol, all things would cut up more time, meaning in all likelihood, if they find an agreement that could be considered real they would have to give themselves a little bit of overtime and pass one of the legislative vehicles that essentially stops the clock to take it into new year's. that was not the plan. that is why they put together what was called sequester so they would be forced to put a legislative gun to their heads to make a deal. looks like they may give themselves a little bit of after school study time. bill: we'll see how that pays off. carl cameron leading our coverage. thank you, sir. martha: the bottom line really does this deal begin to address the economic problems that exist in this country? stuart varney, the anchor of "varney & company" o

correspondent brianna keilar is traveling with the president in hawaii. she joins us live from honolulu. people are talking as though going over the cliff is a reality already. what are you hearing? >> reporter: that is what we're hearing. there's a lot of blame going around. that's some public posturing. when it comes to the reality of whether going over the cliff is a possibility, it's not just what we're hearing publicly but privately from democrats and republicans. and also it's important to focus on this sort of not encouraging fact, carol. there are no discussions going on now between the folks who need to work out some sort of deal here. the white house and senate democrats are not in touch with house republicans and that's key because the senate is going to be reconvening on thursday. anything that gets through congress would need to pass the senate and house with both democratic and republican support. we're also expecting that president obama will likely return to washington, d.c. at this point it seems more a matter of when and not really matter of if. and then right now the plan tha
